Salvador, Bahia is the latter. It’s not just a destination — it’s a rhythm, a movement, a heartbeat.

Recently named a UNESCO Creative City of Music, Salvador wears this title like a crown, and after visiting two of its most incredible museums :  the cidade da música da bahia and Casa do Carnival — I get it. I really get it.

These museums aren’t just exhibits. They’re immersive experiences. They connect the dots between past and present, culture and resistance, joy and struggle ,  all told through the lens of music.

Let’s start with…

Cidade da música da bahia : A Sonic Tapestry of Bahian Identity

Tucked behind the Elevador Lacerda in Salvador’s Comércio district, the Cidade da Música da Bahia is more than a museum, it’s a celebration of sound. From the moment you walk in, you’re greeted by floor-to-ceiling visuals, soundscapes, and an architectural layout that draws you into the heart of Bahian musical traditions. This multi-level experience includes over 9 interactive video installations that explore the origins and evolution of Bahia’s unique sounds:  from sacred chants to Carnival rhythms, from samba and axé to more experimental and classical compositions. Each screen is packed with stories, performances, and context that make it clear just how deep Salvador’s musical roots go.

What sets this space apart is how multi-dimensional it is. It’s not just about hearing music, it’s about understanding how it lives in daily life, spirituality, resistance, and innovation. You’ll learn how African traditions were preserved and reinterpreted in the rhythms of Candomblé, how samba-reggae emerged from Bloco Afro movements, and how local genres evolved into global forces. There’s even a section dedicated to the musical contributions of LGBTQ+ communities and women artists who have transformed the cultural landscape of Bahia. It’s one of the most inclusive, dynamic musical archives I’ve ever experienced.

One of the highlights of my visit was a spontaneous drumming session led by a staff member. As I tried to keep pace with traditional Carnival rhythms, I realized this wasn’t just a museum, it was a portal. That hands-on moment reminded me that music in Salvador isn’t a product to consume, it’s a practice to engage with. Just steps away, another exhibit let me try a karaoke version of Bahian classics, giving me the space to laugh, sing, and connect with the joy that fuels this culture. These interactive elements turn the visitor into a participant, which is exactly how music works here in Bahia.

Upstairs, there’s a beautifully curated section honoring producers, arrangers, and composers — the often unsung heroes of music. Through interviews, archival footage, and listening stations, the museum shows how behind-the-scenes creatives have been instrumental in shaping Salvador’s sonic identity. Whether you’re a vocalist, beatmaker, or just a curious traveler, the Cidade da Música offers a layered, emotional, and truly unforgettable journey. It doesn’t just show you why Salvador is a music city, it lets you feel it in your chest.

Casa do Carnival : The Ultimate Ode to Sound, Color, and Celebration

Just a short walk away, nestled beside the famous Catedral Basílica, is Casa do Carnaval, an equally immersive and electrifying experience that focuses on one of the most iconic expressions of Salvador’s music culture: Carnival. But let me be clear,  this isn’t just a museum of floats and feathers. Casa do Carnaval goes deep into the roots of the celebration, showing how music, movement, fashion, and spirituality come together to create a cultural phenomenon that is at once playful and revolutionary. The museum starts with beautifully designed exhibits showcasing the evolution of Carnival costumes, sound systems, and the political messages embedded in the parades.

You’ll explore the history of Salvador’s most powerful Carnival movements, including the Blocos Afros like Ilê Aiyê, Olodum, and Filhos de Gandhy,  which were born out of Black resistance and cultural affirmation. These organizations used music as a tool to reclaim identity and uplift Afro-Brazilian heritage, and Casa do Carnaval ensures that this message is front and center. Through video interviews, costume displays, and curated playlists, you begin to understand how deeply Carnival is tied to the people of Salvador,  especially its Black communities who have led, innovated, and preserved these traditions despite generations of marginalization.

Then comes the immersive room  and it’s a moment. You step into a circular space where Carnival scenes are projected floor-to-ceiling and wall-to-wall, accompanied by surround sound. You’re not just watching Carnival,  you’re in it. You feel the drums. You see the dancers spin around you. The vibrant colors and collective joy are contagious, and for a moment, you feel like you’re marching in the bloco yourself. I stood there smiling, heart pounding, completely moved. It brought tears to my eyes. This wasn’t nostalgia,  it was living culture, and the museum lets you embody it for just a few precious minutes.

Upstairs, you’ll find a rooftop café with stunning views of the bay and Pelourinho. It’s the perfect spot to process what you’ve just experienced while sipping a juice or espresso. Whether you're a first-time visitor to Bahia or returning with deeper questions, Casa do Carnaval leaves you with a new understanding of how music, costume, and celebration can carry generations of resilience, pride, and unity. It reminds us that Carnival isn’t just a party, it’s a spiritual, social, and musical movement that continues to evolve every year.

\ud83d\udccdTravel Tip: Come ready to move — or at least sway a little. And stop by the café upstairs after the tour. It’s a peaceful spot to take it all in and grab a fresh juice or espresso while overlooking the city. Most videos include English-translated audio via QR code, and staff are friendly and helpful if you need context. They also have Headphones you could borrow to listen. I would bring a backup phone charger because i spent two hours in there and my phone did need some extre juice afterwards.

UNESCO doesn’t hand out the Creative City of Music title lightly. This designation is given to cities that make music central to their cultural identity, economy, education, and innovation.  not just as a product but as a pillar of community. Salvador lives and breathes this ethos, and the Cidade da Música da Bahia and Casa do Carnaval are two living proof points.

Why It Mattered to Me

As someone who created Travel Through Music, I’m always seeking out places where rhythm is more than sound :  where it’s legacy, language, memory, and movement. Salvador is exactly that. My time at the Cidade da Música and Casa do Carnaval was more than just a museum visit, it was a transformative experience. I came in as a traveler and left as a student, a participant, and honestly, a fan for life.

At the Cidade da Música, I was reminded that Black music traditions are never static :  they adapt, evolve, and speak across generations. At Casa do Carnaval, I felt what it means to dance with purpose.  to move as a way of remembering and celebrating. Becoming a Flight Angel for Puerto Rico was an experience that touched my heart in ways I could never have anticipated. It all started with a simple sign-up process on the Flight Angels website. I provided my basic information like name, age, and contact details, along with my flight specifics such as departing and arrival airports, confirmation, dates, and times. Little did I know that this small act would set in motion an incredible journey of compassion and connection.

Within just a few hours, I received an email from a representative named Courtney. She quickly assessed the needs of rescues in Puerto Rico to see if any pups required transportation to either New York City (where I had a layover) or Boston (my final destination). The efficiency and dedication of Courtney were truly remarkable. Within 12 hours, she confirmed a little pup named Ginny from ARF | Animal Rescue Foundation of Rincon Puerto Rico.

Ginny, a sweet soul, had been adopted by an elder in Boston. However, due to ageism, the prospective owner faced rejection from local rescues. It broke my heart to learn about this unjust situation, but I was determined to help make a difference. Enid, Ginny's current foster mom, reached out to me to coordinate the necessary arrangements. She needed my flight details to register Ginny under my confirmation and ensure a safe journey for this precious pup.

The airport meetup was surprisingly effortless. Enid and I had communicated the night before, discussing the best time and location to meet. The following morning, we connected at the airport, and together we smoothly navigated the check-in process. I didn't have to lift a finger; Enid took care of everything. As we walked through security, I held Ginny close in my arms, feeling a sense of purpose and connection. It was a seamless journey, with Ginny sleeping peacefully during both flights. During our layover, we even had a little potty break in a pet restroom, equipped with a convenient pee pad.

Finally, we reached our destination, and the new owners, with whom we had already spoken the night before, eagerly awaited Ginny's arrival. The anticipation and joy in their eyes were indescribable. Witnessing the impact we had made on not just Ginny's life but also her new owners filled my heart with an overwhelming sense of fulfillment and gratitude.

Being a Flight Angel taught me about the critical time constraints faced by many pups and kittens. Once they reach a certain weight, their ability to fly in a carrier becomes limited, putting their chances of adoption at risk. Through the Flight Angel program, we provide these beautiful souls with a guarantee of a new and safe life. The experience was both humbling and heartwarming, reminding me of the power of compassion and the difference we can make in the lives of others.

Welcome to our musical journey through Panama! We are delighted to have the opportunity to chat with Angie and get an exclusive insight into her passion for Arab percussion, her unique approach to creating hand-painted jewelry based on Arabic instruments, and her commitment to promoting cultural exchange and supporting world musicians. So, let's tune in and join the conversation as we explore the fascinating world of the Sound of Mazzika!

Safiya:  What inspired you to create the Sound of Mazzika, and how did you develop the idea of making hand-painted jewelry based on Arabic instruments?

Angie: The original concept of Sound of Mazzika came to be when I started learning Arabic percussion. I was learning to play darbuka with Nezih Antakli, and as someone who's always loved novelty jewelry, I decided to look for a pair of drum earrings online. I was genuinely surprised to see they were totally unavailable. I worked in 3D print
manufacturing then, so I figured with a fine arts background like mine - why not make them myself? I had a coworker and dear friend Thomas Brown teach me to 3D model, and I designed, printed, and then painted my first pair. The rest is history.

Safiya: What is your opinion on the role of technology in your creative process, and what do you think about the future of 3D modeling/printing in the arts?

Angie: I fully believe that 3D modeling/printing is the future - for all fields. We see so many incredible, inspiring advancements in the medical field, with prosthetics and even organ tissue being printed with bio-printers. 3D printing has infiltrated and progressed the fashion industry. It can even be applied in culinary contexts and so on. The arts are no different, and I find immense joy in mixing modern technology with traditional, artisanal techniques. 3D modeling allowed me to apply my sculptural background in a digital space, saving so much time prototyping, so I could put my efforts into the painting details. Understanding science and engineering also helps me design things that are durable and comfortable with intent, not by accident. I am a huge advocate of cross-training in fields, so whatever you're doing can be better informed, and it's also healthy for the brain to be well-rounded and maintain neuroplasticity. Safiya: What do you hope people take away from your jewelry, and what message do you want to convey through your work?

Angie: I hope people see pride and beauty in our cultural arts from my work, whether they are of SWANA descent and connect to it personally or are of a different background and have an appreciation for our culture and history. Arabic music, dance, poetry, and visual arts are rich, intricate, and historical - our artistic legacy is something to be massively proud of. I celebrate and normalize Arab culture in my designs.

Safiya: Can you tell us about your experience with feedback and reception of your work, especially within the Arab community, and your thoughts on representing and celebrating Arab culture in fashion?

Angie: I've been extremely pleasantly humbled and surprised by the feedback from Arabs and Arab Americans regarding my work. I've had a shocking number of Non-Arabs also compliment what I do and support me, but of course, I created this business with my own community and heritage in mind. It's a way to wear our love on our sleeves - literally.
We have so much to be honored about, and realizing we can feel stylish truly and originally in our own skin is empowering. Lastly, I'm just applying our own normal cultural motifs in clothing - and people realize how aesthetically pleasing it all is, all on its own.

Safiya: What are some of your favorite Arabic instruments, and which have inspired your jewelry designs the most?

Angie: My favorite Arabic instruments are probably riqq (Arab tambourine) and qanun (arab zither). I also love Sagat, finger cymbals that can be played in an ensemble or as someone is dancing. Darbuka holds a special place in my heart because it's what I first started learning and what I first 3D modeled, but riqq and qanun are the most fun for me to play. I learn music with Nezih Antakli, Gilbert Mansour, Firas Zreik, and Suha Deeb (who is also my dance teacher).

Safiya: For our Last Question: What's next for Sound of Mazzika, and how do you see the business evolving?

Angie: Sound of Mazzika is expanding beyond just products and into experiences. I see myself long-term hosting events, creating literature, and possibly even apps and games around Arab music and culture. I am having a Classical Bellydance show with my live quartet, "Sound of Mazzika," on April 29th. I also intend to have employees delegate some of my responsibilities.

An iconic form of traditional Panamanian music is found in cumbia, a dance and music style with roots in Colombia but adopted and adapted by Panamanian musicians. The cumbia is characterized by its fast pace, infectious rhythm, and use of traditional instruments like the accordion and the guiro. Another impactful genre of traditional music is tamborito, a dance and music style often performed at festivals and other celebrations. The tamborito is characterized by its use of drums and call-and-response singing and often tells stories of love, struggle, and social issues. In recent years, Panama has also emerged as a center for urban music, particularly reggaeton,, and trap. Artists like El General and Nando Boom pioneered the reggae en español movement in the 1980s and 90s, and their legacy can still be heard in the music of contemporary stars like Sech, Boza, and Akim. Due to these great genres, Panama is a great country to experience live music.

This beautiful historic theater, with its grand architecture and exquisite acoustics, has hosted some of the biggest names in music, including Plácido Domingo, Yo-Yo Ma, and Sting. For those looking for a more casual and intimate setting, Panama City has a thriving jazz scene. Venues like the Danilo's Jazz Club and the CasaCasco offer regular performances by local and international jazz musicians, as well as opportunities for jam sessions and workshops. These venues also serve as gathering places for Panama's jazz community, allowing artists and fans to connect and collaborate.

Beyond the capital, Panama's rural regions offer a wealth of traditional music and dance rooted in the country's diverse indigenous and Afro-Caribbean cultures. Festivals

As I stated, CA is home to America's most well-known festivals. If you are planning to travel to Cali, think about planning your trip around a festival. You won't regret it. Below are my top 3 favorite Cali Festivals, but you can find out about almost all of them here. 

• Coachella Valley Music & Arts Festival is one of California's oldest and the USA's most extraordinary music & art festivals. It is a festival you will remember and should even be on your musical bucket list. Every year they bring an unbelievably stacked line-up spanning every genre, massively beautiful stage production, incredible food & drink vendors, and a solid festival atmosphere. Do buy your tickets. This festival does sell out!!!

• Outside Lands, the best part is it's a festival that gives back. This a charitable festival that invests in the cultural vitality of the Bay Area through grants to regional music and arts education programs. Outside Lands is Northern California's biggest and best music festival! This festival has excellent lineups, a sustainable effort, a Gastronomy stage, live art, and more. 

• California Roots Festival is where reggae lovers go to have a good time. The biggest names in Reggae from around the world showcase this fantastic genre. You got your Jamaican Reggae, Cali reggae, Polynesian Reggae, and World Reggae (yes, they are all subgenres of Jamaican Reggae). As Oprah would say, "You get Reggae, and you get Reagae; everyone is getting Reggae!"As many Cali Roots Fest goers would tell you, "It is not a festival. It is a movement." 

Dance Classes

Get your groove on. Do you love to dance, go to a local dance studio and learn some new choreo!

• Millenium Dance Complex, LA . Hands down, this is California's most famous dance studio, Every dancer wants to take a class here.

• Culture Shock Dance Center, San Diego, Has a great variety of classes for all age groups and is among the best dance studios in CA. If you go on a Friday they hace a "Happy Hour Discount and you get a class for half off the usual rate.

• 3rd Dance Street, LA Is a vibe! Come every 3rd of the month and join for a night of social dancing!

SofarSounds is one of the best ways to discover live musicians from an area and be in an atmosphere that is entirely about intimate, musical curation. It's a secret show. You will know the location and the artists 48 hrs before the show. You never know where you might end up or who you might see. SofarSounds is currently in these cities: East Bay, Orange County, Los Angelos, San Diego, Sacramento, San Jose, San Francisco, and Santa Barbara. It's a fun way to spend a night out. You will definitely come out from experience wanting to go again and again.

Museums

• The Grammy Museum is self-explanatory, but on top of all the music history, you also receive a better understanding of the recording process. One gets to learn how records have been made since their inception to their current state. This museum has rotating musical exhibits featuring music's greatest stars and ongoing lectures.

Tours

• LA Hood Life Tours Founded in 2010 by Hodari Sababu (The Game's stepfather), this guided tour of the South Los Angeles landmarks of local hip hop history.
